Due to the positive impact of pre-existing school mentoring programmes, MTU Kerry Campus identified a demand for an accredited mentoring programme. Consultation with community stakeholders including North East and West Kerry Development, South Kerry Development Partnership, Family and Community Resource Centres and Community Resource Centres as well as MTU staff and students confirmed this need for such.
A bespoke Level 6 Certificate in Mentoring in Education was developed. Delivered on a part-time basis, the programme is comprised of two modules; The Irish Education System (5 credits) and Mentoring for Education (10 credits). The objective of the programme is to provide accredited mentor training to interested community members who can then engage in school or community-based mentoring initiatives. Now in its third year, MTU Kerry Campus will welcome the next cohort of students in January 2024. A short video about the programme was also produced.
